Suspended Trinamul Congress Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh was finally arrested by the Bidhannagar police commissionerate on Saturday in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam. On Friday, he had feared he would be arrested. The arrest was effected in the evening when he was facing the 11th round of questioning at the Bidhannagar South police station.
Mr Ghosh has been charged under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) relating to case number 34 at Electronic Complex police station in Salt Lake, which started following a complaint in April by the general manager of Broadcast Worldwide, then owned by Saradha, over non-payment of salaries to its journalists.
Deputy commissioner of police (detective department) Arnab Ghosh said, “Mr Ghosh, who was the group media CEO of Saradha, was arrested because he played equal part in the conspiracy along with company owner Sudipta Sen and others. The evidence collected so far against him is strong. Besides, Mr Ghosh was involved in other roles outside his CEO portfolio. Evidence indicates this.”
On Mr Ghosh’s alleged role in siphoning funds, the DCP added, “There are some inputs. The investigation is on. The chargesheet in this particular case is yet to be filed.”
