Labour MP Tom Watson, who has been leading the campaign against phone hacking by newspapers owned by media baron Rupert Murdoch, on Monday questioned the UK government about involvement in the controversial Operation Bluestar in 1984.
Mr Watson, a prominent Opposition MP, told BBC Asian Network he has seen documents that show Margaret Thatcher’s government assisted the Indian government in the controversial raid on the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1984.
The documents, released by the UK government under the 30-year rule, show “top secret papers” from the then UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher authorising the SAS (Special Air Services) “to collude with the Indian government on the planning on the raid of the Golden Temple,” Mr Watson said on Monday in a statement on his website.
Mr Watson’s website has scans of two documents revealing the UK’s role in the matter. A top secret letter from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office dated 23rd February, 1984, titled ”Sikh Community,” which revealed India had asked for British help.
