Amethi is angry with its MP Rahul Gandhi but not angry enough to be eager to reject him.
The rally organised by AAP in Amethi on Sunday amply demonstrated the fact that the people of this VIP constituency were still not prepared to severe their links with the Gandhi family.
The participation of the local people in the AAP rally was abysmally low. The few that were there admitted that they had come to see the ‘new tamasha’. The larger crowd, according to them, was ‘imported’ from other places.
“We are not ready to search for options even though we are not too happy with our MP,” says Y.K. Singh, a retired government servant.
Amethi is understandably distressed at the fact that they no longer enjoy unrestricted access to their MP, Rahul Gandhi.
As a veteran Congress leader explains, “The people here are used to having direct access to their MPs — be it late Rajiv Gandhi or Mrs Sonia Gandhi. In recent years, however, they are asked to meet their MP through his emissaries who ensure that only a selected few get to meet Rahul Gandhi. Naturally, the people feel that Rahulji is maintaining a distance from them and this is the main reason for their angst.”
The people of Amethi no longer enjoy the ‘walk in’ privilege at 12, Tughlak Lane that they did at 10, Janpath when late Rajiv Gandhi lived.
“We could walk in without an appointment and Rajivji would meet us. Our problems would be redressed immediately — whether it was a job, illness or anything else. If he was not available, his staff would take care of us — even ask us if we had a place to stay in Delhi. Today, when we go to meet Rahulji, we are badgered by the security and there is no one to hear our problems,” said Abhishek Singh, a physically challenged man in his late forties. The lack of development also irks the local people and they feel that it is the lack of connect between the people and Rahul Gandhi that is responsible. “If we can meet him freely, without intermediaries, we will not need to hold up his convoy or stage demonstrations,” says Abhishek.
However, despite the simmering anger, people are still not willing to give up on the Gandhi scion.
“Except for Saifai, no other VIP constituency in UP has seen development. Amethi gets recognition because of the Gandhis and when we tell even a stranger that we belong to Amethi, he looks up to us with respect,” says Saurabh Maurya, who owns a small motor garage in Gauriganj.
