Former UP chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati declared Wednesday her party will not enter into an alliance with any party for the Lok Sabha polls, and asked BSP workers to be ready to counter other parties in a direct fight.
She said she wanted the BSP to emerge as a “power balancer” during the formation of the next government. Addressing a mammoth “Savdhan Rally” on her 58th birthday to launch the BSP’s election campaign, she claimed that after the BSP came to power in Uttar Pradesh with a good majority, the Congress, BJP and SP struck a deal to transfer their votes to each other so that the BSP could be defeated in a direct contest.
“It was because of this that we won only 20 seats in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, but ranked second in 47 seats. We also lost the 2012 Assembly polls due to this, but I have now devised a plan to counter it,” she said. She asked her party workers to get OBCs and Muslims on board so that a broad Dalit-OBC-Muslims coalition could be formed that could defeat all other parties.
The BSP chief termed BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi as a “cloud that thunders but brings no water”, and said: “Modi is making populist promises but will not be able to fulfil them. The BJP was in power at the Centre for six years ... Why didn’t they fulfil all these promises then? Modi talks of following the Gujarat pattern if he becomes PM. But in Gujarat the reality is that every third child suffers from malnutrition. Also, he couldn’t ensure the safety of Muslims during the Godhra riots in Gujarat which is a small state... So how can he be expected to ensure the safety of the minorities across the country?”
She also attacked the Aam Aadmi Party, asking what Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was doing when dalits were being forced out of their homes in Haryana, his home state.
