A day after a 51-year-old Danish woman tourist was gangraped after being beaten up and robbed by eight men near New Delhi railway station, the police claimed Wednesday it had arrested two persons.
The victim, who came to India January 1, lost the way to her Paharganj hotel Tuesday. On seeking directions, she was allegedly taken by these eight to a secluded spot, not far from Connaught Place, where the men grabbed her cash, iPod and other valuables at knifepoint, and then took turns to rape her.
On Wednesday, the police claimed it arrested Mahender alias Ganja, 25, and Raja, 22, who lived on the footpath near the railway station. A senior police officer said an iPod, earplug, Nokia cellphone and `800 in cash was seized from Mahendra, while the victim’s spectacles and `1,000 in cash was recovered from Raja.
JCP (central range) Sandeep Goel said all other culprits were identified and raids were on to nab them. He added that those who had raped the victim were vagabonds. Several people had been detained for questioning and investigators claimed they had some “definitive leads”. The victim flew back to Copenhagen after giving her email address to the police.
