The cash-strapped Railways hope to earn more revenue by replicating the airlines’ fare model on some trains. It plans to introduce 20 premium trains whose fares will be determined on the basis of the demand for tickets.
This was decided after a pilot project on the New Delhi-Mumbai helped the railways earn 37 per cent more than it would have got through fixed fares.
An internal Railway Board note seen by this newspaper indicates these 20 new trains will be rolled out in a few months. It is aimed particularly aimed at those who are forced to take flights after being unable to get confirmed train reservations for last-minute travel. Tickets for these premium trains can only be booked online via the IRCTC portal, which has a dynamic fare calculation system in place.
