Gujarat CM and BJP Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh had deteriorated in the past decade and women were not safe even in their own homes. “Women are scared of venturing out of their homes. I urge these Samajwadi leaders to, at least, ensure the safety and security of women in the state,” he said.
Talking about corruption in UP, he asked: “Where is the money going? The people of UP want answers because the pockets of leaders are being filled but people are unhappy here. Two days ago, Mulayam Singh had said that UP’s budget for people’s welfare was more than Gujarat’s budget, but if that is so, then why are people unhappy here?”
In his 50-minute speech, Modi attacked the Congress, ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and the AAP government in Delhi and sought a mandate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections by projecting himself as “chowkidar” who will guard public funds.
The Gujarat chief minister said that he had made his state free of riots and would make UP also riot-free if his government is voted to power.
Unprecedented security measures were in place for Mr Modi’s rally in Meerut and people wearing blankets were subjected to multiple checks after an intelligence input had warned against terrorists infiltrating the crowd in blankets.
