The Indian government on Friday asked Italy to step up security for its embassy in Rome after the mission there received a live bullet and hate mails in the wake of the Italian marines’ case here.
The European Union, of which Italy is a member, hoped Friday that a solution will be found to the marines’ issue.
The two marines are facing trial in India for allegedly shooting dead two fishermen off the coast of Kerala, whom they mistook for pirates in February 2012.
Ministry of external affairs spokesman Syed Akbaruddin, asked about the hate mails, told reporters Friday: “We have sensitised our friends in Italy and hope necessary measures will be taken to ensure safety and security.”
He added that New Delhi was in touch with the Italian government at various levels, including “at a very senior level”.
