Union minister Anand Sharma is willing to take on BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi in Varanasi while Capt. Amarinder Singh is likely to contest against BJP heavyweight and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley from Amritsar.
“Definitely. I will pack my bags and leave tomorrow for Varanasi if so desired by the (Congress) party,” Mr Anand Sharma told PTI when asked if he would consider fighting Mr Modi in the elections.
Mr Sharma, commerce minister, Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan, belongs to Himachal Pradesh and is a brahmin. Some feel that after the exit of sitting BJP MP Murli Manohar Joshi from the fray in the holy city, it may help the Congress to field a brahmin candidate.
