Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has claimed that BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had recently sent him two emissaries to plead for holding direct or indirect talks with him on Kashmir.
“The BJP leader recently sent his emissaries to various pro-freedom leaders, including me, to talk on Kashmir and get commitment on the issue,” the octogenarian separatist leader said at a press conference here on Friday, two days after he returned from Delhi where he stayed for about a month to get treated for his ailments.
He added, “Two people came to meet me on March 22. They wanted me to talk to Narendra Modi, directly or indirectly, to get commitment on the Kashmir issue but I refused. They said he will address the issue after he becomes Prime Minister. I told them since he is RSS man and I have no illusions about him. I also told them it won’t get us anywhere to talk to him as we’re not unaware of its (RSS’) stand and policy vis-à-vis Kashmir.”
He further said that he also told the visitors that Mr Modi was a “killer” and that he presided over the massacre of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002. The separatist leader said that both the Modi emissaries are Kashmiri Pandits but refused to identify them by their names.
Without naming Kashmir’s chief Muslim cleric and chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Mr Geelani said that those people who have publicly stated that if Mr Modi becomes Prime Minister he would give a sympathetic look to the Kashmir issue and will be soft on the people of the state have actually been contacted by him through his emissaries. “Those who say Mr Modi as PM will be soft and have expectations from him have actually met his men in Kashmir,” he said.
