Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said that in 1984 Rajiv Gandhi had ventured out and appealed to those rioting at the time to maintain peace, communal harmony and law and order, though his mother’s body was at home. He questioned why Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi didn’t do anything to control the communal riots in his state in 2002.
Mr Azad, said that when Delhi had witnessed massive communal riots after Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984, Rajiv was travelling through colonies, nooks and corners of the trouble-torn areas of the capital appealing people to maintain peace and harmony. He was doing this when his mother’s dead body was at home. However, Mr Modi did not move to restore peace, communal harmony and law and order even though the state he was the CM of was burning in communal riots for two months, Mr Azad said.
