Additional solicitor-general Harin Raval resigned from his position on Tuesday, a day after creating a political storm and accusing Attorney-General G.E. Vahanvati of trying to interfere in the CBI’s report on its probe of the coal allocation scam.
It is learnt that Mr Vahanvati, who Mr Raval has accused of lying to the Supreme Court, may also soon exit his position.
“I am resigning as ASG in the SC as desired. Please accept this with immediate effect and oblige. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the government,” Mr Raval said in a statement. Sources said Mr Raval sent in his resignation earlier in the day.
It is understood that the government has taken a tough stand on the issue after the embarrassment it has suffered due to the a letter to the government’s top law officer, Mr Vahanvati, accusing him of having tried to influence the CBI probe.
Mr Raval is learnt to have said in his letter that he was not willing to be made a scapegoat in the matter and that Mr Vahanvati was present at the meeting attended by the law minister and CBI director, among others, on March 5 in which the agency’s draft report was allegedly changed.
In his letter, Mr Raval is understood to have narrated how he got an SMS from the A-G to reach the law minister’s office with the CBI status report.
The CBI has admitted that the report it submitted in March to the Supreme Court, which is supervising the coal enquiry, was vetted by Union law and justice minister Ashwani Kumar and two bureaucrats from the PMO and the coal ministry.
