The era of hostility with Delhi has come to an end for chief minister J. Jayalalithaa. Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi called her on Sunday to assure that there would be “absolute cooperation” between his government at the Centre and hers in Tamil Nadu. He also congratulated her for her “remarkable” victory in the Lok Sabha polls.
Mr Modi was reciprocating to the warm congratulatory letter that the AIADMK supremo had sent him on Friday as soon as it became clear that the BJP would form the next government.
A statement from the TN government said that Mr Modi had called the chief minister on Sunday afternoon and thanked her for her letter. “He also conveyed his congratulations for the remarkable victory that her party has won in the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu,” it said.
The statement added that Ms Jayalalithaa wished Mr Modi “a very successful tenure as Prime Minister of India”. The PM-designate on his part assured the CM that there would be “absolute cooperation between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu,” it said.
An AIADMK party release said BJP president Rajnath Singh spoke to Ms Jayalalithaa over phone and they greeted each other on the amazing wins scored by the two parties. While Mr Singh congratulated her for her “grand win”, Ms Jayalalithaa greeted the BJP chief for his party’s victory, said the AIADMK release.
Fighting the election all alone, Ms Jayalalithaa swept the poll winning 37 of the 39 seats in the state and in the process decimated arch rival DMK, the Congress and the BJP’s six-party front.
The poll heat had caused some sparring between the two long-time friends in the final phase of electioneering, but now that both have emerged winners in such remarkable manner, it’s only natural that they return to their time-tested friendship based on mutual respect. By sending out that congratulatory letter even before the final verdict came from the Election Commission, Ms Jayalalithaa not just cemented friendship with Mr Modi but also ensured that the Centre-State relations that had taken a bad beating during the UPA reign, got strengthened for the good of all.
