Senior Congress leader and former Union minister M. Veerappa Moily suggested the Congress high command to follow the Trinamul Congress and the AIADMK in taking “drastic action” against the party officials and chief ministers who had failed to give results in the recently-held Lok Sabha elections. He also wants the action to be taken “immediately”.
Mr Moily, a sitting Lok Sabha member, came out with this suggestion in a write-up which appeared in the latest issue of the party mouthpiece Congress Sandesh, under the title “Adversity Will Reap Opportunity”.
He said the Congress has to understand the 21st century politics and the challenges ahead, it has to unleash a major surgery to relook at itself within the turbulent environment.
“We need to allow the fresh source of water or otherwise the party will dry up. When the regional party like TMC (Trinamul Congress) has dismissed three ministers for having failed in their respective Lok Sabha constituencies and the AIADMK having expelled one of its minister for having soft-spoken on Modi, the Congress cannot afford to brood any delay in holding people responsible both at the state and national level, including the state governments ruled by the Congress,” Mr Moily said.
He further said, “The persons in charge of states and the chief ministers will have to be made accountable and drastic action will have to be taken as events will not wait. We should act immediately in respect of states where we are going for election within 4 to 5 months’ time.”
Although he did not name the states and the chief ministers, Maharashtra and Haryana are going to polls in October-November this year. And the Congress’ performance in these states remained pathetic. On the other hand, the AICC has not been able to take corrective steps after realising that it has virtually no choice but to go ahead with the current team.
Another two Congress-ruled stares are Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh where the Congress drew blank in the polls.
The Congress has failed to open its account in over a dozen states in the general elections.
Mr Moily, who is a member of the AICC’s election committee, said the Congress should reinvent itself with appropriate craftsmanship and it should not wait for regional outfits to take up this gigantic taks of building a secular India.
