Army Chief Gen. Bikram Singh on Friday met his predecessor and current minister of state for development of the Northeast region (DoNER) Gen. V.K. Singh (Retd.), in what defence sources said was a “courtesy call”. Defence sources said the Army has a huge interest in development of the northeastern region especially since troops are deployed in that region in considerable numbers for the past several decades to tackle insurgency affecting the area.
Incidentally, the meeting comes soon after a furore in Parliament over Gen. V.K. Singh’s (Retd.) tweets that pointed to his unhappiness over the appointment of Army vice-chief Lt. Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag on May as the next Army Chief. Incidentally, it had been speculated even during Gen. V.K. Singh’s tenure as Army Chief that he did not share the best of relations at that time even with Gen. Bikram Singh.
