The Union Cabinet, in its meeting on Wednesday, discussed the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament, which is likely to begin from July 7. The Cabinet also gave its assent to a proposal to amend the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) Act, besides approving scrapping of empowered group of ministers (EGoMs) and groups of ministers (GoMs). The amendment to the Trai Act will come as a bill in Parliament to replace the ordinance promulgated to facilitate the appointment of former Trai chief Nripendra Misra.
The Cabinet approved that May 31 decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to abolish 30 GoMs and EGoMs which were set up during the previous UPA government. “Now, the ministries and departments concerned will take decisions on pending matters and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) will assist ministries in tackling complex issues. All the facts related to GoMs were placed before the Cabinet,” minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
