Students face further admissions delay
The University Grants Commission is likely to reject the new proposal by Delhi University that suggested a panel of academics resolve the ongoing controversy over the four-years undergraduate programme (FYUP).
The UGC is likely to ask the university to immediately implement its directive on starting admission of students to courses on the three-year pattern. This could, however, further extend the uncertainty on admissions to DU courses that have been stalled due to the controversy.
The UGC directive is expected to be issued soon. Its chairman Ved Prakash met human resources development minister Smriti Irani to brief her about the ongoing controversy, and it is learnt that the minister expressed her “displeasure” at the way things were being handled and her desire that the UGC put things to order as soon as possible.
The minister is also learnt to have voiced concern over the delay in admissions at the university, which has put a questionmark on the future of lakhs of students. The rejection of DU’s proposal by the UGC is seen as an attempt to deny a face-saving mechanism proposed by the university’s vice-chancellor, Prof. Dinesh Singh.
