The Centre on Thursday exempted relief-carrying vehicles going to Jammu and Kashmir from paying toll. Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari is also planning to visit the flood-affected state on Friday to take stock of the damages to the roads in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The Centre has authorised the state principal resident commissioner at the J&K house in New Delhi to issue exemption certificates to vehicles carrying such relief material from Delhi to Jammu till September 24,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Centre apparently decided to exempt toll charges on the request of a few of the organisations mobilising relief material to help the people in flood-affected state.

Mr Gadkari is also likely to take a first-hand assessment to the extent of damage to rural roads in the state.

“The Centre has been airlifting drinking water bottles for the flood victims and has also dispatched water purification plants of four lakh litres per day capacity,” the government said.

Meanwhile, the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) chaired by the Cabinet secretary Ajit Seth is meeting every day to take detailed and meticulous stock of the day-to-day situation in the flood-affected state.
