Sushma Swaraj
External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj is scheduled to interact with nearly 100 foreign ministers during her 10-day visit to the US from September 24 and will join the delegation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will reach New York on September 26.
Ms Swaraj, who will attend a series of meetings of foreign ministers of G-4, Saarc, IBSA, G-77 and Brics countries, will also hold bilateral meetings with her counterparts whom she has not met before. She will also participate in a ministerial meeting of the committee on Palestine.
Asked if Ms Swaraj would be accompanying Mr Modi when he goes to the US, officials said she will reach the US before the Prime Minister, subsequently join his delegation in New York and will stay back to attend a UN event to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary as the “Day of Non-Violence” on October 2. She will accompany Mr Modi to Washington when he meets US President Barack Obama on September 30, the MEA said. Giving the details of Ms Swaraj’s programme, the MEA spokesperson said she will also attend meetings of the foreign ministers of G-15 and Commonwealth countries, among other “plurilaterals”.
