The state BJP on Monday strongly opposed the decision of governor K.N. Tripathi to select interim vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University Abhijit Chakrabarti as its full term V-C.
“The governor has approved the name of Prof. Chakrabarti proposed by state government for the university’s full term vice-chancellor. However, we do not support the decision taken by Mr Tripathi. We do not believe the appointment of Prof. Chakrabarti’s as full term vice-chancellor would help to resolve the issues plaguing the university. We strongly oppose to the decision, “ state BJP president Rahul Sinha said.
Mr Sinha further claimed that the situation, where police were brought inside the campus and defenceless students were beaten up, unfolded at the behest of Prof. Chakrabarti.
“The governor might have thought it was right to appoint him as the full term vice-chancellor but we do not think the same way. The policies of state government and the vice-chancellor of the university need to be blamed for the brutality which took place in the campus, “ Mr Sinha added. The governor’s decision came after Prof. Chakrabarti’s controversial move to call the police inside the campus to lift students’ protest which earned him the wrath from a section of the society.
It was learnt that governor K.N. Tripathi, who is also the chancellor of the university, has approved the name of Prof. Chakrabarti and sent the file to education department.
His tenure as interim vice-chancellor of the university ends on October 28.
