Bangalore will be called Bengaluru, Mangalore as Mangaluru, and Mysore will be Mysure after the Centre has cleared the Karnataka government’s proposal

Its official. Bangalore will be called Bengaluru, Mangalore as Mangaluru, and Mysore will be Mysure after the Centre has cleared the Karnataka government’s eight-year old proposal to rename 12 cities and tows of the state.

The Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Friday gave his approval to the state government’s recommendation sent to the MHA on October 27, 2006, to change the names of the 12 towns and cities in consonance with their pronunciation in Kannada language. The other cities and towns which have been re-named are Bellary which is renamed as Ballari, Bijapur as Vijapura, Chikmagalur as Chikkamagaluru, Gulbarga will be called Kalaburagi, Hospet as Hosapete, Shimoga as Shivamogga, Hubli as Hubballi and Tumkur which will be called Tumakuru.

Incidentally, the Centre’s move to rename Bangalore as Bengaluru among other cities and towns has come two days after the Assembly elections in Maharashtra concluded.

It may be recalled that Karnataka and Maharashtra are locked in a boundary row over Belgaum.

Besides Belguam, there had been lack of unanimity over renaming Bangalore as some suggested it may be called Bengalooru while others wanted it as Bengaluru.

The home ministry cleared the move after it has received no objection from other stakeholders, including Survey of India, department of posts, ministry of railways and science and technology and the Intelligence Bureau for the change in the nomenclature of the identified cities. Instructions have also been issued for rechristening the post offices and railway stations, a Union home ministry official said.
