Continuing its winning trend since the Assembly byelections in Uttar Pradesh in September, the Samajwadi Party, on Sunday, wrested the Kairana Assembly seat form the BJP too.
The Samajwadi Party candidate Nahid Hasan won the seat with a slim margin of 1,099 votes. The SP candidate polled 83,984 votes while the BJP candidate Anil Gujjar polled 82,885 votes. The Congress candidate Arshad Hasan ended up with merely 16,906 votes.
The Kairana seat was vacated by BJP leader Hukum Singh who won the Lok Sabha elections in May this year. In September’s byelections, the BJP lost eight of the 11 seats it earlier held to the Samajwadi Party and could retain only three seats. With Kairana in its bag, the Samajwadi Party has wrested nine of the total 12 seats that the BJP earlier held in the UP Assembly.
