Trinamul supremo and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee cut short her stay in the national capital on Wednesday, a day after being heckled by SFI activists, and said “Delhi is not a safe place”. She cancelled her meeting with Union finance minister P. Chidambaram.
The Delhi police, in its report to the ministry of home affairs, claimed Ms Banerjee had ignored their advice to enter Yojna Bhavan through the VIP gate.
The CM, reacting to the police report, said she considered herself “an LIP (less important person”.
Ms Banerjee had cancelled her meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday evening citing health reasons. “I am returning to Kolkata. I had been unwell since last evening and had to be administered oxygen. I will come back, but Delhi is not a safe place. I am sorry,” she told reporters before leaving for Kolkata.
Meanwhile, Ms Banerjee said the Prime Minister had called her after she had to cancel Tuesday’s meeting. “The Prime Minister apologised for the incident. He said the incident, which was a first in Delhi, should not have taken place,” Ms Banerjee told reporters.
